Learning to Swear in America by Katie Kennedy!!

Learning to Swear in America by Katie Kennedy

July 5, 2016

An Asteroid is hurtling toward Earth. A big, bad one. Maybe not kill-all-the-dinosaurs bad, but at least kill-everyone-in-California-and-wipe-out-Japan-with-a-tsunami bad. That's something to swear about, probably.

Yuri, a physics prodigy from Russia, has been called to NASA as they calculate a plan to avoid disaster. He knows how to stop the steroid. Yuri's research in antimatter will probably win him a Nobel Prize if his competitor in Russia doesn't steal his work--and if there's ever another Nobel Prize awarded. But the trouble is, even though NASA asked for his help, he's seventeen, and no one there will listen to him. Something else to swear about, if Yuri knew how.

He knows he can save the world, but what will be left for him? Then he meets Dovie, who lives like she's oblivious to the impending doom. Being with her, on the adventures she plans when he's not at NASA, Yuri catches a glimpse of what it means to live a life worth saving. And he learns how to swear.

Katie Kennedy's debute is fresh, funny, and will inspire a damn or two.

Review

Oh man, this book is intense! With Yuri being new to America, being a genius, and a horny teenager, this book had me laughing, cringing, and worried. With an Asteroid heading for earth Katie Kennedy describes the mechanics for the science and non-science folks to understand. I enjoyed the amount of research she must of put into this book to have it flow the way it did! It was truly amazing. After taking endless science courses I enjoyed being able to understand most of what was happening, but I was grateful for the breakdown for when I didn't.

She hits the horny, nerdy, teenage boy on the head, and I enjoyed every minute. Giggling page after page rooting for Yuri. I loved the hippie family that Dovie comes from and how it contracts Yuri's family. The character development all around was amazing and believable. I was transported to NASA watching over Yuri's shoulder, experiencing all of his emotions, it was truly a great experience.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a great laugh or wants to be on the edge of their seat waiting to see what happens next!

Hate Notes By Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward Cover Reveal!!

A standalone romance novel published by Montlake Romance By: New York Times Bestselling Authors Vi Keeland & Penelope Ward Release Date: Tuesday, November 6, 2018 SYNOPSIS: It all started with a mysterious blue note sewn into a wedding dress.  Something blue.  I’d gone to sell my own unworn bridal gown at a vintage clothing store. That’s when I found another bride’s “something old.”  Stitched into the lining of a fabulously feathered design was the loveliest message I’d ever read: Thank you for making all of my dreams come true.  The name embossed on the blue stationery: Reed Eastwood, obviously the most romantic man who ever lived. I also discovered he’s the most gorgeous. If only my true-love fantasies had stopped there. Because I’ve since found out something else about Mr. Starry-Eyed.  He’s arrogant, cynical, and demanding. I should know. Thanks to a twist of fate, he’s my new boss. But that’s not going to stop me from...

"I ate them like salad..." Our love for books, regardless of their content.

Happy Banned Books Week readers! Usually, I don't think too much about banned books.  I have such a deep love for the written word that it never occurs to me that someone, somewhere could possibly take offense to the beautiful words these brilliant minds have shared with us.  The theme of this week however has forced me to stop for a second and think, "Where would I be without my books y'all?!" Emma and some of her favorite banned books :) One of my all time favorite books, FAHRENHEIT 451 by Ray Bradbury is not only a banned book, but it is also an insightful and deep commentary on censorship (how's that for irony eh?).  I was "fortunate" enough to read this book in high school.  I say "fortunate" because I know in my heart how blessed I was to study literature in school, however I struggled with the forced nature of reading created by needing to prove I had learned something from the material.  By the time I got to my Senior year when ...
